Petaling Jaya has some of the largest and busiest shopping centres in Malaysia, plus a good number of smaller neighbourhood malls. That is great news for shoppers, but it also creates a trap: trying to see too many of them in one day. Traffic, parking queues and long walks between buildings can turn a fun day into a tiring one.
The answer is to shop by cluster. Pick one area, go deep, and pair it with a good meal nearby. This guide walks you through the main shopping areas in and around PJ and how to plan each one.
Step one: decide what kind of day you want
Before choosing a mall, decide what the day is for. Each of these needs a different kind of destination:
- A specific purchase, such as electronics, furniture or a particular brand.
- A general browse with food and a film.
- A family outing where the children need something to do.
- A slow, local day with markets and neighbourhood shops.
Once you know the purpose, the choice of area almost makes itself.
The Bandar Utama cluster: 1 Utama and around
If you want the biggest selection under one roof, start at 1 Utama. The mall opened in 1995 and says it now has more than 770 shops across seven levels. It is also home to The Secret Garden, which the mall describes as one of the world's largest rooftop gardens.
1 Utama has plenty to fill a day beyond shopping. Camp5 runs an indoor climbing gym there. Sealantis Dive Centre, a PADI 5-Star Instructor Development Centre founded in 1996, operates from the mall too.
Getting there is easy. Bandar Utama MRT station on the Kajang Line sits beside the mall. It is also the start of the LRT Shah Alam Line, which opened to the public on 29 June 2026. One World Hotel and M World Hotel are nearby if you want to stay close. See more in Bandar Utama.
The Mutiara Damansara cluster: The Curve, IPC and IKEA
This is the best area for a mix of big-box shopping and relaxed dining. The Curve opened in 2005 and has an outdoor street for dining and weekend markets. Right next door, IPC Shopping Centre opened in 2003 as Ikano Power Centre and is anchored by IKEA.
Families often combine a shopping trip here with KidZania at Curve NX. Tickets are sold online only, so book before you go.
The buildings are close together, but check the walking route between them, especially in the rain. Our short guide to an evening at The Curve covers the area after dark. Browse Mutiara Damansara for nearby places.
Damansara Uptown: The Starling and street shopping
Damansara Utama (SS20 and SS21) mixes a modern mall with busy shop-lot streets. The Starling opened in 2016 and has a nature-inspired design. Around it you will find independent shops, cafés and some of PJ's best-loved casual food, including Village Park nasi lemak.
This area is ideal if you prefer strolling between shop fronts over a single enclosed mall. The new Kayu Ara station on the LRT Shah Alam Line serves the Damansara Uptown and Atria area. Browse Damansara Uptown and nearby Atria Shopping Gallery in Damansara Jaya.
Kelana Jaya and Taman Megah: Paradigm Mall and neighbourhood malls
Paradigm Mall opened in 2012 in SS7, Kelana Jaya. It is a popular all-rounder with retail, dining and ESCAPE, an indoor adventure park. The LRT Shah Alam Line's Subang station is described as serving the Paradigm Mall area.
Nearby Megah Rise Mall in Taman Megah is smaller and more local. It is handy if you plan to eat in Taman Megah afterwards.
Kota Damansara and Damansara Perdana
North-west PJ has several malls worth knowing:
- IOI Mall Damansara. This mall was known as Tropicana Gardens Mall until December 2024. IOI Properties bought it in 2024 and gave it the new name.
- Sunway Giza and Strand Mall, formerly Encorp Strand Mall. Both serve the Kota Damansara neighbourhood.
- Hextar World at Empire City in Damansara Perdana. It soft-launched in November 2025, with leisure attractions planned for its full opening. Check its official website for what is open when you visit.

Central PJ: smaller malls with local character
Not every shopping trip needs a mega-mall. Central PJ has older and neighbourhood-scale centres that are easier to get in and out of:
- Jaya Shopping Centre, Section 14. A long-standing PJ name. It was sold to Asian Pac Holdings in 2025, so check its current name and tenants before you go.
- Digital Mall, Section 14. A compact neighbourhood mall close to Jaya Shopping Centre; check its directory for current tenants.
- Seventeen Mall, Section 17. A community mall close to Section 17's food streets.
- Amcorp Mall, Section 52. Known for its weekend flea market, held on Saturdays and Sundays according to the mall's own posts.
- Jaya One, Section 13. A lifestyle hub with restaurants and event space.
Just outside PJ: Sunway Pyramid
Sunway Pyramid opened in 1997 in Bandar Sunway. Bandar Sunway sits next to PJ but is mostly administered by the Subang Jaya city council, so we list it as a nearby destination. It pairs naturally with Sunway Lagoon and is served by the BRT Sunway Line. Allow extra travel time if you are staying in north PJ.
Planning tips that make the day easier
Check the mall's own directory
Tenants change often. Use the mall's official website or app to confirm the shop you need, its floor and its opening hours. PJNET lists the mall as a destination, but we do not track every tenant.
Plan your arrival
If you are driving, note which entrance and parking zone you use. At large malls, take a photo of the zone sign. If you are using public transport, check the walking link from the station to the entrance you actually want. The MyRapid PULSE app is the easiest way to plan train and bus trips.
Choose a meeting point
Groups split up quickly in large malls. Agree a clear meeting point and time before you go your separate ways.
Build in a real break
Shopping days go better with a proper meal. Rather than eating in the food court by default, look at what is nearby. From 1 Utama, Damansara Uptown is a short hop. From Paradigm Mall, Taman Megah and SS2 are close. See the food & dining directory for ideas.
Go early or go late
Weekend afternoons tend to be the busiest time at the big malls. Arriving when the doors open often means easier parking and quieter shops.
Shopping with children
A mall day with children goes better with a plan for breaks and energy:
- Book activities first. KidZania sells tickets online only, and ESCAPE and Camp5 have their own booking and safety rules. Check them before you go.
- Find the facilities. Use the mall directory to find family rooms, nursing rooms and lifts before you need them.
- Pick one mall. Walking between buildings with tired children is rarely fun. Choose a mall with an activity and a food court under one roof.
- Set a meeting point for older kids. A clear, easy-to-find spot works better than "near the escalator".
Don't forget the markets
For a different kind of shopping, visit a pasar malam (night market). SS2 has well-known weekly night markets. Days and locations can change, so check locally before you make a special trip. Read our night markets page for practical tips.
