Getting around Petaling Jaya is easier in 2026 than ever before. The city is now served by five rail lines, a free city bus network and a web of highways. But PJ is also a spread-out, car-shaped city. The station nearest to your destination may still be a highway crossing away from the front door.
The secret is to plan the whole journey, including the last few hundred metres. This guide explains your options and how to combine them.
The rail lines that serve PJ
LRT Kelana Jaya Line
This is the backbone of central and southern PJ. Stations on or near the PJ stretch include:
- Universiti
- Taman Jaya
- Asia Jaya
- Taman Paramount
- Taman Bahagia
- Kelana Jaya
- Lembah Subang
- Ara Damansara
- Glenmarie
It is handy for Section 52 and Jalan Utara (Asia Jaya, Taman Jaya), Sea Park and Taman Paramount, SS2 (via Taman Bahagia and a short ride), and Kelana Jaya. The line continues into Kuala Lumpur, including KL Sentral.
MRT Kajang Line
This line serves north PJ. Bandar Utama station, beside 1 Utama, opened in December 2016. Heading west, the line has stations at Mutiara Damansara, Surian and Kota Damansara before reaching Kwasa Damansara. Heading east, it runs into central KL.
LRT Shah Alam Line (new in 2026)
The biggest change in years. The LRT Shah Alam Line opened to the public on 29 June 2026. It runs 37.8 km from Bandar Utama to Johan Setia, with 20 stations. Stations in the PJ area include:
- Bandar Utama. Interchange with the MRT Kajang Line.
- Kayu Ara. Near Damansara Uptown and Atria, with park-and-ride.
- BU 11.
- Damansara Idaman. Serves Ara Damansara.
- Subang. Near the NKVE Subang exit and Paradigm Mall.
- Glenmarie 2. Links with the Kelana Jaya Line at Glenmarie.
Reports note that changing between Glenmarie 2 and the Kelana Jaya Line requires you to tap out and tap in again. Fares reported at launch differed slightly between sources, so check the current fare in the app.
KTM Komuter Port Klang Line
The Port Klang Line runs along the south of PJ. It has stations at Jalan Templer, Kampung Dato Harun and Seri Setia before continuing to Setia Jaya. It is useful for PJ Old Town and the Section 51/52 area. Trains are less frequent than LRT and MRT, so check the timetable.
BRT Sunway Line
This elevated electric-bus line runs 5.4 km, linking Sunway-Setia Jaya (next to KTM Setia Jaya) with USJ 7 (on the LRT Kelana Jaya Line). It serves Bandar Sunway, including Sunway Pyramid and Sunway Lagoon.
Which station for which area?
Some handy pairings, based on the station guides listed in our sources:
- 1 Utama and Bandar Utama: Bandar Utama MRT/LRT. See Bandar Utama.
- Damansara Uptown and Atria: Kayu Ara (LRT Shah Alam Line). See Damansara Uptown.
- Paradigm Mall: Subang station (LRT Shah Alam Line). See Paradigm Mall.
- Ara Damansara: Lembah Subang or Ara Damansara (LRT Kelana Jaya Line), or Damansara Idaman (LRT Shah Alam Line). See Ara Damansara.
- Kelana Jaya and Taman Megah: Kelana Jaya (LRT Kelana Jaya Line). See Kelana Jaya.
- Sea Park and Taman Paramount: Taman Paramount (LRT Kelana Jaya Line). See Sea Park.
- Section 52 and Jalan Utara: Asia Jaya or Taman Jaya (LRT Kelana Jaya Line). See Section 52.
- Sunway Pyramid and Sunway Lagoon: BRT Sunway Line. See Bandar Sunway.
Always check the walk from the station exit before you go. Some destinations are still a short ride-hail away.
Buses
PJ City Bus
MBPJ funds a PJ City Bus service that links neighbourhoods with rail stations. Routes and fares change from time to time, so check MBPJ's official channels for the current details before you rely on a specific route.
Rapid KL buses and MRT feeders
Rapid KL runs regular buses and MRT feeder buses around PJ. They are useful for the final connection from a station to your destination. Use the journey planner (below) to find the right route.
Paying for public transport
- Touch 'n Go card. The standard way to pay for trains and buses in the Klang Valley.
- Bank cards. As of May 2026, you could not yet tap in and out of Rapid KL gates with a credit or debit card. Rollout was planned in phases. Until then, cards can be used to buy tokens or top up Touch 'n Go at counters and kiosks.
- Travel passes. Rapid KL offers monthly and short-term passes for residents and tourists. Check myrapid.com.my for the current passes, prices and eligibility.
Plan with the MyRapid PULSE app
Prasarana relaunched its MyRapid PULSE app in May 2025. It plans journeys across MRT, LRT, Monorail, BRT and feeder buses. There is also a web journey planner on myrapid.com.my.
Always check three things:
- The station exit closest to your destination.
- The final walk or connecting bus, including road crossings.
- The return journey, especially late at night.
Driving in PJ
PJ is ringed and crossed by major roads, including the Federal Highway, the LDP (Damansara–Puchong Expressway), the SPRINT and the NKVE. The Federal Highway in particular is known for traffic jams. Allow extra time at peak hours and on weekend afternoons near big malls.
Parking
- Malls have their own car parks and payment systems. Note your level and zone.
- Street parking in MBPJ areas. Check the signboard for charging hours and rates, and pay through a method MBPJ currently accepts.
- Park-and-ride. Available at some rail stations, including Bandar Utama MRT and Kayu Ara LRT.
Taxis and ride-hailing
Ride-hailing is often the easiest way to cover the last stretch in PJ, or to travel between neighbourhoods that are not on the same line. A few tips:
- Pin the exact entrance. Large malls such as 1 Utama, The Curve and Paradigm Mall have many entrances. Choose one you can find.
- Check the name and plate. Confirm the car before getting in.
- Groups. Check vehicle size and agree on one pickup point.
- Peak times. Expect longer waits and surge pricing around evening rush hour and heavy rain.
Getting to PJ from the airports
From KLIA
KLIA Ekspres runs non-stop from KLIA Terminal 1 to KL Sentral in about 28 minutes. Check the current fare on the official KLIA Ekspres website. From KL Sentral, change to the LRT Kelana Jaya Line for central and south PJ, or take a taxi or ride-hail. Many travellers simply take a taxi or ride-hail straight from the airport. Check the price in the app before you book.
From Subang airport
Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang sits just west of PJ. Note that the Skypark Link rail service from KL Sentral to Subang airport was suspended in February 2023. We found no confirmation that it has resumed, so plan on a taxi or ride-hail for this short trip.
Walking in PJ
Many PJ neighbourhoods are pleasant on foot once you arrive. SS2, Sea Park, Section 17, Damansara Uptown and PJ Old Town are all good for wandering. Walking between neighbourhoods is a different story, as highways and large junctions often get in the way. Group your stops within one area, and check shade and weather before a long walk.
A simple checklist
- Save the exact destination address and entrance.
- Plan the route in MyRapid PULSE or your map app.
- Check the final walk or connection.
- Top up your Touch 'n Go card.
- Save your pickup point for the trip home.
