Where to stay in Petaling Jaya: an area-by-area guide

Choose your PJ base around the places you need to reach. A neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood look at where to stay.

Petaling Jaya does not have a single hotel district. Its hotels are spread across several neighbourhoods, and each area suits a different kind of trip. A hotel next to a mega-mall is perfect for a shopping weekend but less handy for a meeting in Section 13. A business hotel on Jalan Utara is close to Old Town but not to Kota Damansara.

The trick is simple: list the places you must reach, then choose the area that puts you closest to most of them. This guide walks through the main areas and the hotels PJNET lists in each.

Step one: map your fixed points

Before comparing hotels, write down the things you cannot move:

  • The purpose of the trip. A meeting, a family visit, an event or a hospital appointment.
  • Venues you will visit more than once.
  • How you will arrive. For example, by train from KL Sentral, by car, or into Subang airport.
  • Evening plans. Where you are likely to want dinner.

With those points on a map, the right area usually becomes clear. Then check the actual journey at the times you will travel. PJ traffic at peak hour can turn a short distance into a long trip.

Bandar Utama: for shopping and the new rail links

Best for: shopping weekends, families, and easy train access.

Bandar Utama is built around 1 Utama, one of the region's largest malls. Bandar Utama MRT station on the Kajang Line is next to the mall. It is also the northern end of the LRT Shah Alam Line, which opened to the public in June 2026. That makes the area a well-connected base in 2026.

Mutiara Damansara: The Curve, IKEA and KidZania

Best for: families and leisure trips.

Mutiara Damansara groups The Curve, IPC Shopping Centre with IKEA, and KidZania at Curve NX in one walkable-ish cluster. It is a natural base if children are travelling with you.

Browse Mutiara Damansara.

Section 52 and Jalan Utara: central PJ and business trips

Best for: business travel, Old Town food and central access.

The Jalan Utara area in Section 52, which Wikipedia notes is also called PJ "New Town", has long been PJ's business-hotel district. It is close to Old Town, Section 14 and the Federal Highway corridor. Asia Jaya and Taman Jaya stations on the LRT Kelana Jaya Line serve this side of the city.

Section 13: Jaya One

Best for: events at Jaya One, medical visits and apartment-style stays.

  • Hotel CentreStage Petaling Jaya on Jalan 13/1. This hotel was formerly known as Best Western Petaling Jaya, so older reviews may use that name. Our listing describes apartment-style suites near Jaya One.

Browse Section 13.

Kelana Jaya: Paradigm Mall and the LRT

Best for: easy LRT access and trips toward Subang.

Kelana Jaya station on the LRT Kelana Jaya Line and the nearby lake gardens make this a comfortable, practical base. Browse Kelana Jaya.

Damansara Uptown and Damansara Perdana

Best for: food lovers and longer stays.

  • Somerset Damansara Uptown. Serviced residences above The Starling mall. It puts you in one of PJ's busiest food and café areas, and the new Kayu Ara LRT station serves the Uptown and Atria area.
  • Qliq Damansara at Empire Damansara, Damansara Perdana. Note that this hotel is in Damansara Perdana, not Damansara Uptown.

Browse Damansara Uptown and Damansara Perdana.

Taman Desaria (PJS 5): a value option in south PJ

  • ibis PJCC Petaling Jaya at Jalan PJS 5/29. It suits travellers heading toward south PJ, the Federal Highway or Subang.

Browse Taman Desaria / PJS 5.

Just outside PJ: Bandar Sunway

Bandar Sunway is next to PJ but mostly administered by the Subang Jaya city council. We include it because many visitors combine it with a PJ trip. Sunway's own website lists three hotels in the resort city:

Sunway suits theme-park trips to Sunway Lagoon and shopping at Sunway Pyramid. Allow extra time if you need to reach north PJ often. Browse Bandar Sunway.

Quick comparison

  • Shopping weekend: Bandar Utama or Mutiara Damansara.
  • Family trip with children: Mutiara Damansara (KidZania, IKEA) or Bandar Sunway (Sunway Lagoon).
  • Business in central PJ: Section 52 / Jalan Utara.
  • Events at Jaya One: Section 13.
  • Food-focused stay: Damansara Uptown, or Section 52 for Old Town.
  • Train-first travel: Bandar Utama (MRT + LRT), Kelana Jaya (LRT).

Before you book

Check the exact property

Several hotels in PJ have changed names in recent years, such as Best Western to CentreStage and Sunway Clio to Sunway Lagoon Hotel. Always match the address, not just the name, especially when reading older reviews.

Compare the total, not the headline rate

Look at the room type, number of guests, breakfast, cancellation terms, taxes and fees. Book with the hotel or its official booking channel. PJNET is an information directory, not a booking service.

Ask about what matters to you

Accessible rooms, connecting rooms, parking charges, early check-in and late arrival should be confirmed directly with the hotel. A general listing cannot guarantee that a particular room meets your needs.

Plan your arrival

Check the route from the airport or KL Sentral to your hotel. The Skypark Link rail service to Subang airport was suspended in February 2023, and we found no confirmation that it has resumed. Read getting around Petaling Jaya for current options.

Arriving late or leaving early

Flights and long drives do not always fit neat check-in times. A few tips:

  • Tell the hotel your arrival time. This is especially important after midnight.
  • Ask about luggage storage. It lets you enjoy a last day in PJ after check-out.
  • Check the route for early departures. Ride-hailing is often the most practical option before trains start running. Book a little earlier than you think you need.
  • Stay near your first appointment. If your first morning is packed, choose the area closest to it rather than the cheapest room across town.
