TOPIC: Petaling Jaya City Status

For the month of: November 2005
(30 November Midnight Is The Final Cut).

-------------------------------------------------------------

We have read that Petaling Jaya will be granted city status in around March next year. Some say Petaling Jaya should has been granted the status much earlier as Petaling Jaya has developed much over the years, much of the criteria to be a city has been met much earlier. Do the status come too slow?

Will a city status help PJ to become a much better place for the locals?

Does PJ really need a city status? Some says there was no room for further development, some says there's even no museum in PJ.

BONUS QUESTION: Do you agree instead giving PJ city status, government should put more effort and allocating funds for other places in the country and develop it like PJ?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Don't discuss any other topic in this section. ONLY discuss the question above.

The best response will get RM75.00 cash! The other good responses will be used in an article on the main PJNet.com.my site, with the poster's forum name listed by it. Become famous!

Thanks,
PJNet

Some say Petaling Jaya should has been granted the status much earlier as Petaling Jaya has developed much over the years, much of the criteria to be a city has been met much earlier. Does the status come too slow?
======================================

Yes, I do feel that this city status comes too slow. Petaling Jaya is nothing less developed compared to many other cities in Malaysia which have been declared as city some time ago, if not long time ago. Furthermore, Petaling Jaya, being one of the oldest towns in Selangor, which started as a satellite town of Kuala Lumpur, celebrated its 52nd anniversary in September 2005 and is known to be a focal point of Selangor – the first state in Malaysia which self-proclaimed as a developed state in August 2005, deserves this status as it is known to have met most of the criteria, if not all the criteria, for achieving a city status.

Will a city status help PJ to become a much better place for the locals?
=======================================

Yes, more funds will come with a city status, it will motivate public servants to serve better and keep up to the people’s expectations. Also, local authorities would increase their assessment charges and residents could expect improved services from MPPJ as the council will step up measures to keep the area clean.

Also, a city status will give more confidence to developers and prompt to more aggressive developments. A case in point is Shah Alam, which is rapidly turning into one of the fastest growing corridors in the Klang Valley since it gained city status in 2000. The rate of growth in this western portion of the Klang Valley has been tremendous.

Does PJ really need a city status? Some says there was no room for further development, some says there is even no museum in PJ.
=======================

Yes, PJ needs a city status. A city status may not be necessary if no other places are interested in, or have been conferred this status thus far. The problem is, George Town became a city on 1 January 1957 by a royal charter granted by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, making it the first town in the Federation of Malaya to become a city. Kuala Lumpur, Kuching North, Kuching South, Kota Kinabalu, Shah Alam, Malacca Town, Alor Setar and Miri have been declared as city via royal charters from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, while Ipoh and Johor Bahru were granted city status by their respective state sultans. Malacca was declared a "historic city" prior to being granted city status in 2003. Many other towns are also striving to achieve this city status. The City of Malacca even has twin city status with five cities, which are Lisbon, Portugal (16 January 1984), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (15 April 1989), Hoorn, Netherlands (8 November 1989), Valparaiso, The Republic of Chile (23 June 1991), and Nanjing, China (2001). Also, Bintulu is envisioned to be an industrial garden city in a few years’ time and hopes to achieve city status by the year 2010. If so many towns are striving for this status, it shall be fair to all if every town is given equal opportunity and equal access to this status.

May be some people are not keen on this city status and are cold towards it, giving excuses such as there is no room for further development or there is no museum in PJ. But this is only a matter of views as everyone may voice his or her personal views, though it may not be agreeable to the others.

As a matter of fact, further development is expected as a city status will give more confidence to all parties, be them investors, developers, house buyers, local people and foreigners. When it gives confidence to everyone, it spurs development in many fields.

BONUS QUESTION: Do you agree instead of giving PJ a city status, the government should put more effort and allocating funds for other places in the country and develop them like PJ?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I personally do not agree with the above point of view, that instead of giving PJ a city status, the government should put more effort and allocating funds for other places in the country and develop them like PJ. There is no way to develop every place like PJ so long as there are constraints in resources and funds. Effort and financial allocation should be channeled to the appropriate places in the sequence of priority.

I agree, even I'm staying at D'sara Perdana, known as the Golden Triangle of PJ, the road conditions are speechless. Not only that, all the residents of Metropolitan Square Condo (The condo which located above Citibank D'sara Perdana.) got penalty of late payment of 'Cukai Taksiran', which they notified us late.

Well, I dun think it's only PJ, but the whole of Klang Valley. Well, seems that voting for BN is useless this time since they have been governing for so long time, I think it's quite worth a try to give a chance for the opposing party to rule this country.

Cheers:D

Yes a change of govt is long overdue. City or town does not mean much to me. I'd rather PJ be called a town than a city with crap public amenities and maintenance.
