You can buy these el-cheapo dvd player at Makro, about RM$85 - RM$120. Make sure on the box it says can play MP4 or AVI file formats. Then you play the PC video files on it without any conversion.

some thing smelled means something burnt, usually for appliances like dvd players, it is their step down transformers or their voltage capacitors... so, if that burns, can throw lo, or in my case, send for recycling. Ok.. u might ask, what causes it, might be a few things, defective part, not enough ventilation, a short circuit and most probably a power surge...

too bad.. no point sending for repairs... buying a new one will be cheaper.

If you can open up the dvd player...like what volcanne said, By visual check u can easily determine which component is defective. Idea

your technician is worst then me, and i am no technician, but i do dwell in home DIY and a home bred "Macgyver" celup,

testing for a power with a test pen is really out of the question, it might be ok for power output from the power socket but there is where it ends.

there is no way he can use or should use a test pen to test anything beyond that. A test pen only shows that there is live AC current available at the power source, hence he should be only to see that the power is to switch only. if he switch it on without using a proper equipment to test for any shortage that might cause a short circuit and kabloom!!

What he should have used is a multimeter or a digital multimeter to check for shortage first.

by using this very important instrument, he should test the main power supply grid on in the DVD player, ie: the transformers, the capacitors and other power converting parts before even trying to switch the unit on.

if he doesnt he is not a qualified or a very stupid technician.

Sorry to say, a small cheap faulty part could have caused your DVD unit to burn up!

Im quite agree wid tat. But as tis DVD player is consider a low power consumption item. Mostly u'll find yourself checking on diodes or regulators. Transformers and capacitors damage usually happens in a tv set.

the transformer or rectifier could be shorted. Should use an analog multimeter to check for shorts, if the needle reads 0 ohm or nears to it then you have a faulty unit.

No matter what kinda unit it is, single phase, three phased, DC or AC appliances or machin eries, always test for shortage or leakage... u cant test it with Test Pens without switching them on...

Testing the Caps/diodes/transitors/relays/ics/thyristors/tranformers or whatever other components will have to been done later without the power on! leakage come first.

Changing a power switch which might not be original wont cause any damage to your unit, it is just a simple on off switch, either he means something else or he blew it up by mistake and blame your unit or he know nuts.
