familiarity....
I'd pick a phone which have similar operations as my previous one...uhm...like the arrangement of the menu, phonebook items, etc.
so, if my previous phone is nokia...i'd go for nokia

pick one that is user-friendly!

Before Ericsson partnered with Sony some of the phones in Ericsson's line used Bang & Olufsen speakers which were arguably the best in the world. As such there was no denying that Ericsson phones had top class sound quality & clarity. Having said that the software in the phones were pretty average and there was a distinct lag in response times to keypresses.

Nokia has the most user friendly user interface but I always felt that their pricing was a little bit on the high side as they stressed style over function. Their adverts conveyed the message that if you own a Nokia you were in a higher bracket or class of society and that you had good taste. No wonder there was a time when I could see all these Chinese Apeks wearing Japanese slippers and a Pagoda singlet with a gold Rolex on their wrist whipping out their top of the range Nokias and shouting at the top of their voice to let everyone know that they were Nokia owners.

Meanwhile you have the extremely nerdy looking guy wearing glasses about an inch thick, looking furtively around and then talking very softly into their Motorolas. Yes, Motorolas have got tons of features but you probably need a degree in rocket science in order to fathom the ridiculously complicated menu system. Motorolas are technically awesome and probably the engineering is among the best but they are also the least user friendly of all the brands. (I own probably the cheapest phone on the market today, a Motorola with a supposed battery standby time of something like 20+ days. Now that is what I call superb engineering and technically awesome.)

Another manufacturer I like is Philips. The battery standby and talktimes is the equal of if not better then Motorola. So I guess you people realize that for me the no. 1 priority in a phone is battery life.

So in conclusion, if you wanna try to impress people that you are rich and powerful and has exemplary taste, get a Nokia. Hopefully you dont have to answer the phone around another Chinese Apek who is talking at the top of his voice on the same Nokia model that you have.

If you are a nerd or maybe just want to project that image then get a Motorola or a Philips.

If the sound quality is your no 1 priority then I dont think you can go wrong if you choose Sony Ericsson.

As to camera phones my line of reasoning is this, why buy a camera phone that costs a bomb, takes crappy pictures, is very bulky and unwieldy with a battery life of like 4 hours. Why not buy a phone with good battery life and sound and also buy a camera that takes good pictures for probably a few hundred ringgit more than your camera phone. If you use a camera phone, ppl who know photography are laughing at you behind your back although you will probably impress the Chinese Apek no end!

Nokia - easy to use/cool design keypad etc/advance N series for business use/ but the bad is quite expensive no trade in value and always pop-up new model.

Sony Ericsoon - Much more function music, audio, games, great camera design & pixel, beeautifel menu, theme etc/ but the bad is keypad design average/no friendly use, not support online nokia 2004 software.

Motorola - cheaper price with nice design/cover design/keypad design/ but the negetif is easy to lag/no friendly use/menu design average/screen colour much more blur.

Samsung - cool design/advance design/slim/great screen colour/nice keypad/trade in value high/but neg is camera pixel normally only 1.3pixel/must be careful owner, always no changing cover cap.
