Does Maya calendar predict 2012 apocalypse?
By G. Jeffrey MacDonald, Special to USA TODAY
With humanity coming up fast on 2012, publishers are helping readers gear up and count down to this mysterious — some even call it apocalyptic — date that ancient Mayan societies were anticipating thousands of years ago.
Since November, at least three new books on 2012 have arrived in mainstream bookstores. A fourth is due this fall. Each arrives in the wake of the 2006 success of 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl, which has been selling thousands of copies a month since its release in May and counts more than 40,000 in print. The books also build on popular interest in the Maya, fueled in part by Mel Gibson's December 2006 film about Mayan civilization, Apocalpyto.
Authors disagree about what humankind should expect on Dec. 21, 2012, when the Maya's "Long Count" calendar marks the end of a 5,126-year era.
Journalist Lawrence Joseph forecasts widespread catastrophe in Apocalypse 2012: A Scientific Investigation Into Civilization's End. Spiritual healer Andrew Smith predicts a restoration of a "true balance between Divine Feminine and Masculine" in The Revolution of 2012: Vol. 1, The Preparation. In 2012, Daniel Pinchbeck anticipates a "change in the nature of consciousness," assisted by indigenous insights and psychedelic drug use.
The buildup to 2012 echoes excitement and fear expressed on the eve of the new millennium, popularly known as Y2K, though on a smaller scale, says Lynn Garrett, senior religion editor at Publishers Weekly. She says publishers seem to be courting readers who believe humanity is creating its own ecological disasters and desperately needs ancient indigenous wisdom.
"The convergence I see here is the apocalyptic expectations, if you will, along with the fact that the environment is in the front of many people's minds these days," Garrett says. "Part of the appeal of these earth religions is that notion that we need to reconnect with the Earth in order to save ourselves."
But scholars are bristling at attempts to link the ancient Maya with trends in contemporary spirituality. Maya civilization, known for advanced writing, mathematics and astronomy, flourished for centuries in Mesoamerica, especially between A.D. 300 and 900. Its Long Count calendar, which was discontinued under Spanish colonization, tracks more than 5,000 years, then resets at year zero.
"For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle," says Sandra Noble, executive director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies in Crystal River, Fla. To render Dec. 21, 2012, as a doomsday or moment of cosmic shifting, she says, is "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in."
Part of the 2012 mystique stems from the stars. On the winter solstice in 2012, the sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way for the first time in about 26,000 years. This means that "whatever energy typically streams to Earth from the center of the Milky Way will indeed be disrupted on 12/21/12 at 11:11 p.m. Universal Time," Joseph writes.
But scholars doubt the ancient Maya extrapolated great meaning from anticipating the alignment — if they were even aware of what the configuration would be.
Astronomers generally agree that "it would be impossible the Maya themselves would have known that," says Susan Milbrath, a Maya archaeoastronomer and a curator at the Florida Museum of Natural History. What's more, she says, "we have no record or knowledge that they would think the world would come to an end at that point."
University of Florida anthropologist Susan Gillespie says the 2012 phenomenon comes "from media and from other people making use of the Maya past to fulfill agendas that are really their own."

THIS AGE ENDS IN 2012 ON THE WINTER SOLSTICE
BY WILLIAM B STOECKER
Repeatedly throughout history people have imagined that the end of the world, or at least the end of the present age, was nigh. This is particularly true in times of plague, famine, unrest, tyranny, and war, which pretty well covers most of human history.
Supposedly people were panicking in the eleventh century, and, more recently, prophets have convinced their naive followers to give up all their worldly goods or even committ mass suicide. But this time is different.
We are nearing the winter solstice, 2012 date forecast as the end of this age by the Mayas, who had remarkably accurate lunar and solar calendars, and fairly advanced mathematics, including the zero concept.
The last 100 years or so has been the bloodiest, the most tragic, in all of history, and that is saying a lot. Never before have we had weapons of mass destruction that can virtually wipe out humanity: nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons. These weapons are proliferating into the hands of terrorists and those states that support them, and recombinant DNA technology can potentially create even more deadly germ warfare agents. Never before have we had space flight. Never before have we had anything like the United Nations, which has done absolutely nothing to prevent or even reduce war, terrorism, and democide (its stated purpose) but which serves as the foundation for the dreaded global fascism of the New World Order. And the creation of the state of Israel in 1948 seems to fulfill an ancient Biblical prophecy; when Biblical and Mayan prophecy appear to coincide perhaps we need to take notice. Yet another Biblical prophecy was the so-called “mark of the beast’” without which men could not buy or sell; proposed computer chip implants, the ultimate convenience in a cashless society seem to fit this one pretty well, and can serve, at the very least, to track people if not to control them.
And the timing, the date, and the place of many recent events orchestrated by the global elite seem to point to the end. David Icke has remarked that even if we choose not to believe in sacred geometry and numerology, we should at least understand that the elite take all of this very seriously. If nothing else, such an understanding helps us to predict their next move, and they are becoming increasingly predictable. So let us take a look at the basics of the subject.
The Mayans, and many other ancient peoples, were fascinated by the planet Venus, whose movements form the most accurate clock in the heavens. As Venus orbits closer to the sun and faster than Earth it will pass Earth so that a line can be drawn through the Sun and both planets. If Venus and Earth are on the same side of the Sun this is called an inferior conjunction; if on opposite sides it is a superior conjunction. Either way, the next one will be 583.9 days later, and both planets will be exactly 216 degrees around in their orbits. This is called a synodic cycle. Note that 216 is three times 72, and five times 72 is 360 degrees, a complete circly. A series of five of these cycles takes 7.99 years.A diagram showing the orbits with lines going out from the sun at the conjunctions will have five lines each exactly 72 degrees from the next. If you then draw exterior lines connecting the points of intersection with Earth’s orbit, you will have a regular pentagon like the one in Washington, D.C. the latest addition to the sacred geometry of that city. Draw internal lines from point to point and you have that most powerful of magic symbols, the pentagram, or five pointed star. Note that the ancient Egyptians portrayed stars as having five points, and the human body has five major projections: a head, two arms, and two legs. Here is embodied the key idea of astrology, the connection between us and the stars. As above, so below.
But things get stranger still. The ratio of one of the inner corner-to-corner pentagram lines to any of the outer sides of the pentagon is the Golden Mean: roughly 1.61803 to one. This was beloved by the Greeks, and various ratios in the human body approach this ratio. In most cultures the closer the ratio, the more attractive the person is considered. Then there is the Fibonacci series:1,2,3,5,8,13, 21,55,89,144,etc. Each consecutive number is formed by adding the two preceding, and as you get higher up the series the ratios get closer and closer to the Golden Mean. A spiral formed from these numbers, the Fibonacci Spiral, is found in whirlpools, galaxies, hurricanes, tornadoes, snail shells, rams’ horns, and certain bacteria. If you extend such a spiral at right angles to its plane, you get a helix, as in DNA. And if you are beginning to suspect that this cannot all be coincidence, we’re just getting started. There’s more.
As the Earth turns on its axis every 24 hours, that axis slowly wobbles every 25,920 years. Often called a Great Year, this is almost certainly one of the causes of ice ages. This Great Year is divided into twelve astrological ages, and each of these is 2,160 years long, or ten times the 216 degrees discussed earlier. Every 72 years (that number 72 again) the axis moves one degree around this circle. And if that’s not enough, the average healthy human heart at rest beats 72 times each minute. It would seem that the human body in some way resonates with the solar system and perhaps with the entire universe.
If this isn’t enough, mystics have always taught that, through meditation, the chi or kundalini force, the fundamental energy of consciousness, can be raised from the base chakra up the spinal column to the crown chakra, resulting in the higher state of consciousness called enlightenment. Counting the cervical vertebrae and the ones fused at the base of the spine, we have 33 vertebrae. Note that the thirty third degree is important to freemasons, and that thirty third degree masons like several American presidents have played a major, and sinister role in world affairs. Thirty three is, of course, three times eleven, and the mysterious sunspot cycle is just over eleven years long. As we shall see, multiples of eleven are seen again in the dates and places of the darkest deeds of the global elite.
The twentieth century officially began, of course, in 1900, but little of significance took place that year. More significant is 1914, the year World War One began to make the world safe for fascism. Yet a series of events took place the preceding year, 1913. On the way to enslaving the world, the elite had to begin extinguishing the light of freedom in their New Atlantis, the United States. In 1913 President Woodrow Wilson (the same creature who would later preside over the creation of the League of Nations, the first attempt at global tyranny) secured the passage of the Federal Reserve Act, giving America a national banking system, like the Bank of England and elswehere. This consortium of private bankers were given control of the money supply and interest rates, a sure recipe to make the rich richer and to enslave and impoverish the rest of us. Wilso also pushed through a constitutional amendment, allowing for direct election of US senators, who, hitherto, had been selected by their state senates. Seemingly “democratic,” this weakened states’ rights and centralized power. And Wilson gave America an income tax, via an amendment that was never legally ratified. And few are aware that, in the US, no tax law based on that illegal amendment was ever passed. Americans are rutinely jailed for violating a nonexistent law based on a legally nonexistent amendment. And note that thirteen, as in 1913, is a magic number.
If 1913 is taken to be the first year of a century, what is its final year? You guessed it:2012.
More magic numbers appear. The global elite chose to end World War One in 1918, and eighteen is the sum of seven and eleven, two magic numbers. The ratio of the height to any of the base sides of the Great Pyramid at Giza is exactly seven to eleven. Divide the height of the pyramid into two of the base sides, or seven into twenty two, and you have pi out to two decimal places. And they chose to end the war at eleven in the morning on November (eleventh month) the eleventh. Three elevens total thirty three.
Thirty third degree freemason Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who turned America into a socialist state and betrayed us at Pearl Harbor, took office in 1933. His chosen successor, Harry Truman, was also a thirty third degree mason, and was America’s thirty third president. These two gentlemen gave us the wondrous United Nations and nuclear weapons. The first one was tested at Trinity Site in New Mexico, almost exactly on the thirty third parallel, as is Nagasaki (but not Hiroshima).
And then there is the number 1947, or 19.47. Richard Hoagland has pointed out that if the simplest polyhedron, a regular tetrahedron bounded by four equilateral triangles, is of the right size to be placed exactly within a rotating sphere like the Earth, and one vertex is at the South Pole, the other three vertices will be exactly 120 degrees apart and some 19.47 degrees north of the equator. The ancient Mexican site of Teotihuacan is at this latitude, and Hoagland has pointed out that upwellings of volcanic energy cluster near this latitude, like the great Hawaiian volcanoes on Earth, the Great Red Spot on Jupiter, and the immense Olympus Mons volcano on Mars.
In 1947 freemason Harry Truman turned America into a militarist state with the National Defense Act and a peacetime draft. And that year Kenneth Arnold and others saw nine (another magic number) crescent shaped UFOs. That year also saw the bizarre UFO sighting at Maury Island in Washington State, and, of course, Roswell. The Roswell crash site is almost exactly on the thirty third parallel, and the crash took place on July (seventh month) the fourth (seven plus four equals eleven), the date chosen by America’s Founding Fathers, most of them masons, for our Declaration of Independence in 1776. And what are the odds of a UFO crash near a very small town that was the home both of rocketry pioneer Robert Goddard and future Lunar astronaut and mystic Edgar Mitchell? Both were living there at the time of the crash. I am afraid we have run out of coicidences.
East of Roswell is Dallas, also almost exactly on the thirty third parallel, and JFK was killed on November (eleventh month) the twenty second, and eleven plus twenty two is thirty three.
Nine, as in 9/11, is also a magic number, and one of the planes that day was allegedly flight eleven, and another was flight seventy seven (seven times eleven). And don’t forget that the train bombings in Spain were on March (third month) eleventh.
Like I said, we ran out of coincidences quite a while back there, and we now are suffering from the Chinese curse: we live in interesting times. And those times appear to be getting very, very short.

2012 & The Consciousness Singularity
If you have not yet encountered any of the information related to this particular year amongst counterculture web pages, books and radio shows, it is worth taking a quick look at the background data. This introduction to the subject will have to be necessarily brief in scope, as there is simply far too much for any one person to convey or for that matter absorb, in a single sitting. The basis of the interest in the year 2012 is in the closing of a great cycle within the Mayan calendar system. The ancient Mayan people of Central America kept the most complex calendar system in the known world. In all they had some 17 different calendars running in unison. The best way to visualize this is as a number of interlocking cogs of various sizes grinding against each other, thus days had a number of component parts. Of course we have an element of these process ourselves within our simpler Gregorian calendar, seven named days, up to 31 numbered days meshing with 12 named months as years pass.
Each calendar related information on schedules for tasks or events such as seed planting, religious rites, eclipse’s, mystical predictions and other happenings seen as cyclical in nature. The calendar that most concerns us here is the 13-Baktun or ‘Long Count' system which runs for just over 5125 years, its start and end set by the originators long, long ago. Who exactly set this calendar turning is not known, however it started on 11-08-3114 BCE and is set to complete on the winter solstice of 2012. The most glaring anomaly here is that the calendar does not start from anywhere near the time of its apparent introduction to the Mayan people, they are very clear on the fact that that thousands of years of the great cycle passed before their particular description of its mechanics. Available evidence tends to suggest they inherited the Long Count from more ancient peoples of Central America , likely the Toltec’s and Olmec. Even so, this still does not take us back to anywhere near five thousand years ago.
There are a number of reasons why modern scholars are fascinated by the Mayan people and their amazing calendar systems. It’s important to note that mainstream researchers and those in the counterculture often do not agree on what is most important about this time measuring system. Some aspects however, are considered important by both camps. To better introduce the Mayan people themselves I have used the information of an academic authority on the Maya civilisation, Professor Michael D. Coe. His description of the 'historical Maya' peoples is only summarized here, however his books can be found in your local library or online for the full story.
The ancient Maya people were residents of the Yucatan peninsula, Guatemala , Belize and some parts of Mexico , El Salvador and Honduras. Their civilization rose to prominence in approx. 250AD and receded/collapsed in around 900AD. Before that was the pre-classic period going back to around 2000BC in which they developed a farming culture. The classic period saw the building of some of the most astounding structures in South America including those at sites such as Copan, Palenque, Chich'en Itza and the palace of Xpuhil .
They adopted, and radically advanced, the calendar systems already existing from earlier cultures in the South America 's and took astronomical understanding to a very high level. They were aware of both the solar and tropical year, though seemed happy to go with a 365 day 'vague' year, which slowly shifted due to the extra time ignored. They were however extremely concerned with keeping the lunar month accurate, calculating it to be 29.53020 days long, we now know it is actually 29.53059. For Venus they used a 584 day calendar system, we now know it is 583.92. They also seem to have arrived close to both the years of Mars and Mercury, with their figures of 780 and 116 days respectively.
Maya technology and wisdom was also applied to the arts, they managed to create some of the most amazing works of carving that we know of. The working of hard volcanic stone and gems was nothing less than incredible. Their artists often bored holes in tiny jade beads that were so precise and slim; we today would have to use our most advanced facilities to match them.
The Maya people had a complex spiritual hierarchy of Gods and metaphysical beings. Their rich cosmology, mythology and religious doctrines are absorbing and fascinating. Most notable is the God-Man known as Quetzalcoatl, whom is often discussed in relation to 2012 lore. They perceived time to be cyclical, rather than linear like us. Cosmic order was viewed from a cause and effect perspective, but included causes originating in unseen higher realms, this related to their view that all things are interconnected whether physical or metaphysical.
When a people clearly obsessed with cyclical events, known for pinpoint accuracy, adopt a calendar as enormous in scope as the 13-Baktun most scholars conclude they would only do so if it tracked something particularly important to their civilization. The Mayans themselves have said that the 5125-year period encompasses a single world age and that such world ages are prone to ending with environmental disasters. They have also said that in their spiritual belief system the end of a world age is a time of great opportunity. Each time this occurs humanity will choose to either move into a new more harmonious age, or face an apocalyptic catastrophe. Thus far mankind has experienced four catastrophic events that they recall in their mythology and was largely obliterated by floods, fire, wind and earthquakes.
There is also evidence that the 21-12-2012 date was considered important to various other ancient peoples from the Americas and further a field in places such as Sumer , China and Egypt . Certainly many modern indigenous American peoples agree with the Mayans, most notably the Hopi Indians, but tribes from the furthest regions of the Amazon jungles in the South to the frozen wastes of the Canadian North also concur. In Egypt we find that the pyramids of the Giza plateau seem to have been set in such a way as to provide both a time marker and an optimum viewing platform for the astronomical phenomena associated with the winter solstice of 2012. On that day the milky way will seem to rise horizontal to the Nile on the ground, whilst Orion’s belt will align with the three major pyramids, revealing the old axiom, ’as above so below’. Additionally the sun will rise up into the position of alignment with the centre of our milk way galaxy, whilst Venus will switch to its morning star phase in its cycle. Some Egyptian mythology states that this event marks the birth of a new age via the 'channel of the ages' from the centre of our cosmos, a location linked with their concept of Ma’at, or that which brings order from chaos in the universe.
During the 1970’s the McKenna brothers investigated the possibility that the ancient Chinese divinatory system, the I-Ching, had originated as an ancient Chinese calendar. They used a Mandelbrot fractal set system to investigate this possibility, and surprisingly the overlay revealed a pattern within the ever diminishing numeric flow. The pattern discovered seemed to mesh well with the 13-month lunar calendar, precession of the equinox, sun spot cycles and recorded major events in human evolution. Although perhaps not conclusive, their findings are suggestive of a calendar system not wholly unlike that of the Mayans being present. It is important to note that their work was done prior to any talk of the Mayan calendar.
What are the physical & meta-physical happenings associated with the year 2012?
The year 2012 has come to serve as a hub, nexus and strange attractor for myriad types of information, predictions, phenomena and events over the last decade or so. The entire period between the early 1990’s and onward to the early 2020’s is almost as important to look at. Unlike the talk surrounding Y2K this is not a one day event subject; most people are not expecting much of note other than certain astronomical occurrences to happen on the 21st of December in 2012, no sudden end of the world. Rather the date is regarded as a spectral portal through which human consciousness itself will pass, and be weighed in its worth, much like the ancient Egyptian belief that men’s souls were weighed on the scales of the Gods, so as to assign them to their correct afterlife.
This period of some two decades or more has been categorized by some of the indigenous elders of tribes such as the Mayans, as the 'speeding up', or 'quickening'. This is so labelled because our perception of events will change, things will seem to happen exponentially faster as time itself spirals into smaller and smaller loops before entering the 2012 singularity. It is also held that in this temporal bottleneck past and future will be constantly in flux, ancient phenomena and future phenomena manifesting alongside those of the modern day. Alogside this timeslip, will be a polarizing of forces with a swelling of interest in compassionate spiritual living, met by a diametrically opposed rise in aggression and greed.
Some of the more often discussed esoteric subjects in relation to this period are the birth on the planet of a generation of highly advanced spiritual beings, currently commonly labelled as Indigo Children, and a massive increase in the occurrence of both psychic abilities and supernatural phenomena. Other subjects being expounded within the 2012 counterculture are the possible arrival of aliens, or some kind of biblical ascension in which 'spiritually pure' persons will pass into higher realms of existence, or indeed walk into the Christian heaven.
The plethora of 2012 information souces also deal with the manifold physical happenings associated with the predicted changes. This includes a great number of disaster level Earth events, as well as radical changes in how human society functions globally both in political and social terms. Most of the related books, web-sites, and radio shows seemingly agree that the period in which 2012 serves as a hub will include many painful happenings. The phrase that perhaps best sums up this mode of thinking would be, “you can’t make an omelette without breaking any eggs”.
Seemingly when new ages of existence are being born it is much akin to a human birth, plenty of pain and suffering pre-empt the moment of joy and relief when the act is complete and all is found to be well. There are a number of both earthly and cosmic disaster scenarios discussed in relation to this time. These include, but are certainly not limited to; mega-tsunami, super-volcanoes, mega-quakes, massive solar flares, super-storms, biosphere collapse, colossal meteor impacts, magnetic & geological pole reversals, earth crust displacement, encounters with an ‘X’ planet or large-scale terrestrial and extra-terrestrial warfare. Each scenario has a wealth of evidence behind it, though it quickly becomes clear that some are far more unlikely than others.
Important points to emphasize:
1. Despite much of what is being said on the internet currently 21-12-2012 is not a doomsday.
2. If nothing other than certain astronomical events happen on the date this does not quash the subject as the date is merely a hub.
3. Much of what is being discussed in relation to the subject is in no way sanctioned by the actual indigenous Mayan people.
4. Practically every form of supernatural, spiritual, and esoteric phenomena is in some way now linked to the 2012 subject.
5. Nobody is 100% sure about the true meaning of the 2012 data and about what we should do, where we should be or what will happen!

what do you expect 2012 brings you?
the apocalypse? to you, this is another story about the apocalypse (which you do not believe in anyway) but both articles doesn't claim as such nor do the mayans themselves.
the mayan's "long count" calendar marks another end of an age in dec 21, 2012. this is the date when cosmic bodies begins another repetitive cycle. it will be another 25800 years before another "long count" expires.
consider yourself lucky for being able to witness this cosmic event because it takes place during our lifetime. _________________ Niah-gong!!! That deserves a slap
