1. ISSUE OF PRECESSION OF THE EQUINOXES
Prof. Dr. Ong Hean-Tatt 10th January 2008

Introduction

Most are using the wrong Year Sign for both Feng Shui and astrology purposes.

As each Chinese New Year approaches, there would be a spate of forecasts about the coming year by both astrologers and Feng Shui masters. The forecasts can be conflicting or do not fit what eventually happened in the said year. There can be good reasons why this is so, which are generally that the current masters failed to take into account the "precession of the Equinoxes" in their dating methods!

Shift of Full Cycle through 12 Zodiac Signs Every 25,800 Years

The rotational axis of Earth wobbles, making a full circle through the 12 Zodiac signs once every 25,800 years. This is known as the "precession of the Equinoxes". The Vernal Equinox point is where the ecliptic intersects with the Celestial Equator. It is the point when the Sun stands on the first day of Spring.

Some 2,000 years ago this intersection point was seen against the background of the stars of Aries the Ram. Since that time, this point has always been referred to as "The first point of Aries"... nowadays the intersection point is seen against the background stars of Pisces, the Fishes. This is due to a movement called the precession of the Equinoxes, caused by a top-like wobble of the Earth. In another 2,000 years the first point of Aries will be in Aquarius, the Water Carrier, another 20 centuries will bring it to Capricornus, the Seagoat, and so on around the Zodiac until after 25,800 years it will be back again in Aries. (Staal 1961p.39-40).

Axis of Earth's Rotation Wobbles a Full Round every 25,800 years

The Earth rotational axis now points to Polaris, the familiar North Pole Star. However, this rotational axis does not always point to Polaris as the Earth wobbles. The wobble of the Earth causes the rotation axis to shift in a circle taking 25,800 years to return to the same spot.

* The furthest point of the Earth's orbit around the Sun is the aphelion which is now around early July 4 and the nearest point is the perihelion which is now around 3rd January. Aphelion 4th July is near the Summer Solstice (23 June) and perihelion 3rd January is near Winter Solstice (22nd December).

* The ancients used to take the perihelion to start the New Year. However, due to the wobble of the Earth and the precession of the equoinox, each time the Earth arrives at the perihelion point, the season will advance from Winter towards Spring, then towards Summer and so on. That is the season will arrive at a precise point on the orbit faster and faster.

The perihelion is close to the star constellation of Aries. As the ancients used Aries to start the New Year, over the span of the past 4,000 years, the season of the New Year shifted from Winter to Spring. This is why the ancient Chinese New Year was in winter but has now shifted into Spring.

The interactions of the seasons with the planetary positions will experience shift changes.

Correction of One Zodiac Sign Every 2,000 Years

"The opinion has been very generally held and expressed by Chinese scholars that at some remote date the new year's festival was held in China at the season of the winter solstice." (Plunket 1903 p.190).

The New Year conjunction of the sun and moon close to the Lunar Constellation Siou Hiu occurred in Winter Solstice (Branch 1 Tzu) during Emperor Chuen Ho time in 2500 BC. The New Year was still around Winter Solstice (Branch 1 Tzu) during the Hsia dynasty (2205 to 1700 BC) and at the beginning of the Shang dynasty (1700 to 1126 BC), but changed closer to Spring during the Chou dynasty (1126 to 251 BC) to Branch II, Chou, and then Spring (Branch III, Yin) in the Han dynasty (251 BC to AD 220).

No Corrections since End of Han dynasty

But the Chinese had lost this knowledge of the precession of the Equinoxes and have not adjusted the Zodiac signs since the end of the Han dynasty (250 BC to AD 220): "The Chinese, not knowing of the precession of the equinoxes, are rather perplexed by the discrepancy, but caring less for accuracy and more for ancient tradition, ignore the actual discrepancy, and still represent the twelve signs, not as they appear now, but as they appeared to their ancestors two thousand years ago." (Eitel. 1873)

Need for Adjustments of Years in Feng Shui and Astrology

That is, now, already more than 2,000 years since the Han dynasty, the sign should be adjusted from Yin (Tiger) to Mao (Rabbit). This means that the Year 2007 dubbed Year of Boar was actually Year of Rat. Hence, 2008 which would conventionally be Year of Rat is actually Year of Ox! Many modern masters would be actually telling your sister's or brother's fortune!

In a research analysis into several people, it was found that over 80% of the persons required a shift of one year to get a much more accurate horoscope forecast, the remaining 20% being neither here or there. In another analysis of a few thousand people listed in a biography book, it was also found that, for several professions, the Chinese Zodiac signs need to be shifted one year to get the accurate forecast. In the case of the lady reporter who interviewed me, a shift of one year also yields a better horoscope.

There will be a need to shift the animal signs one year ahead. It also means that, in the geomancy and astrology use of annual Guas, the Gua number has to be shifted one more year backward.

2. ISSUE OF 20 YEARS YUN AND SATURN JUPITER CONJUNCTION
Prof. Dr. Ong Hean-Tatt 10th January 2008

Introduction

Most are using the wrong Yun Sign in areas like Xuan Kong, etc.!

Another important issue which creates date inaccuracies is the 20 years Yun used in San Yuan Feng Shui , which is due to the Jupiter Saturn conjunction, whose periodicity of 20 years is also the basis of the astrological Age of the Hebrews.

Saturn, the "Ancestral Temple" Planet

The Chinese astrology terms the beautiful ringed planet Saturn as the "Ancestral Temple" star. It makes one orbit around the Sun in 29.5 years.

The conjunctions of Saturn with the other planets form important markers in astrological Time. The Satrun Jupiter conjunction is fundamental in the Chinese astrological period of the 20 years Yun:

* Jupiter has an orbit of 11.882 years. .
* The conjunction of Saturn with Jupiter occurs every 19.84 years .

The Saturn Jupiter conjunction is the basis of the Chinese astrological 'Yun'. Feng Shui and astrology practitioners should understand the astronomy of their arts.

Jupiter Saturn Conjunction as Basis of Yun of 20 Years Duration

Each San Yuan period of 180 years will have 9 Yuns, with 3 successive Yuns forming the 60 years Yuan. If a Jupiter Saturn conjunction occurs at one point on the orbit around the Sun, it will return to this same point 60 years later, forming the Yuan era of 60 years. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd conjunctions will occur at 3 different points along the orbit. The point of the 1st conjunction will also be that of the 4th and 7th conjunctions, while the point of the 2nd conjunction will also be that of the 5th and 8th conjunctions, while the 3rd, 6th and 9th conjunctions will be at the same point. This yields the auspicious 1-4-7, 2-5-8 and 3-6-9 Parent Strings combinations in San Yuan Feng Shui forecasts.

Hebrews add One Jupiter-Saturn Cycle every 2,000 Years

By convention, since Emperor Yao's time circa 2405 BC, the Yun starting from 2004 is supposed to be Yun 8.

However, the Jupiter Saturn conjunction is not exactly 20 years but 19.84 years. The difference is insignificant in the short term but will build up into a serious difference every 2,000 years.

The Hebrews will adjust for this discrepancy by adding an extra Jupiter Saturn Age or cycle every 2,000 years.

But the Chinese had not done this since Yao's time.

Need for Adjustments of Yuns in Feng Shui and Astrology

In the over 4,000 years since Yao, the Jupiter Saturn conjunction will jump at least 2 cycles - meaning what is now taken as Period 8 is actually Period 1!

We note that about evert 2,000 years, the Jupiter Saturn conjunction will jump one Yun cycle Concidentally, every 2,000 yeats the precession of the equinoxes will also cause the Zodiac sign to shift one sign.. That is, every 2,000 years there will be a need to shift one Yun sign and also one Zodiac sign.

3. CHINESE CALENDARS NOT ACCURATE
Prof. Dr. Ong Hean-Tatt 12th January 2008

Introduction

The ancient Chinese emperors would not use the calendars to evaluate their Feng Shui and astrology as they knew the calendars could never be accurate! However, the ordinary people had no choice but to use the inferior calendars. It is time you understand why.

Solar and Lunar Cycles Had to be Harmonised

The Chinese calendar is not so accurate a calendar as appeared. As the 12 lunar months are shorter than the solar year, an extra 7 months have to be added every 19 years to synchronise the solar and lunar cycles. These extra 7 months are known as "intercalary months". The astrological implications of being born in an intercalary month are complicated.

No matter how the lunar cycles are synchronised with the solar cycles there is always a slight difference, which caused the intercalation method to fail again and again in due time, necessitating calendar reforms.

In the Shang dynasty, the intercalary month was just added to the end of the year and became a 13th month. Sometime in the Chou dynasty it was added into the middle of the year. During the Sui dynasty, it could be added in between any two months. The present Chinese lunisolar calendar created by the Christian Jesuits adds the intercalary month when the lunar cycle falls between the beginning of one Solar Stem and the end of the next Solar Stem, with a rule that intercalary months cannot be added for the winter months but must be postponed accordingly.

No calendar can keep total track of the astronomical movements and had to be reformed now and then.

Fragment of Chinese Calendar

Attempts to Use 24 Solar Terms Calendar to Mark Time

It is possible to use the stars constellations to divide the celestial sky into 24 equal divisions. This principle is the basis of the 24 Solar Terms, which, in recent time before the Republic, was used to provide guidelines for agriculture practices.

Each Solar Stem composes 15 degrees of the orbital circle of 360 degrees. The synodic lunar cycle (from new Moon to new Moon) is about 29 days 12 hours 44 minutes, being short of 30 degrees of the orbital circle. When the lunar cycle falls between the beginning of one Solar Stem and the end of the next Solar Stem, an intercalary month is called for.

Some practitioners try to avoid the complications of the intercalary methods by just using a 24 Solar Terms calendar, known as the 24 Solar Stems calendar.

Use of 24 Solar Stems Calendar for Feng Shui and Astrology

This 24 Solar Stems calendar was developed only during the Sui dynasty, circa AD 600. It was a calendar meant to track the changes in the seasons, information whch was highly applicable to agriculture.

Significant aspects of both Feng Shui and astrology are related to the actual Moon phases and these aspects cannot be tracked by the socalled "month" in the 24 Solar Stems calendar. The 24 Solar Stems may be able to help forecast seasonal effects in Feng Shui and astrology but these will only be partial and incomplete, and may even be contraditory if true lunar effects are masked out.

Inadequacies of Calendars

Both the luni-solar and 24 Solar Stems calendars cannot pinpoint the actual positions of the planets. The actual positions of the planets are important in astrology but can only be determined by direct astronomical observations.

In the short term, approximations of planetary positions can be calculated through formulaes. But as these are only approximatiions they need to be reformed now and then. The blind use of Feng Shui and astrologucal formulaes coming down from over 1,000 years ago is questionable in terms of accuracy.

Emperors Referred to Actual Astronomical Positions for Astrological Time

Knowing these problems, the ancient Chinese emperors would not use these calendars for Feng Shui and astrology purposes. This was because the emperors would require their astronomers to pinpoint the actual positions of pertinent planets and stars in the sky for making Feng Shui and astrological predictions. The ordinary Chinese people were not allowed to consult planetary tables so that the imperial families could have an edge over their people.

The last knowledgeable Feng Shui master who understood the usage of the celestial systems was the Tang master Yang Yun Sun, who stole the forbidden book of imperial planetary tablets. After the Tang, Chinese capability in astronomy declined enormously.

The Chinese emperors had used the astronomical readings for their Feng Shui and astrology, leaving the ordinary people to use the inferior calendar system. The calendar system being based on rounded numbers are only approximations of actual periods of astronomical movements.

Need for More Accurate Time Determination

The Western and Hindu astrologers, in a superior way to date astrological time, directly look at the actual positions of the planets and stars to cast the forecasts.

If the Chinese can also do this, the Chinese Feng Shui and astrology will become much more accurate. However, the Chinese need to re-discover the actual correspondence between their astrological formulae with actual planets and stars systems.

The inaccuracies with respect to the above issues render the current Chinese Feng Shui and astrology predictions anybody's guesses. This is why the yearly Feng Shui astrological forecasts can often miss the mark.

The Tang dynasty grandnaster Yang Yun Sun was aware of the danger of using the inaccurate calendars and advised direct astronomical observations for Feng Shui and astrology purposes:

* Once again you are advised to identify the constellation, so that the good and bad, disaster and prosperity would happen like a miracle. Qing Nang Aow Yi 3.85-3.86
