I think I have done this camping.. with a fire before!...I'd suspect you gotta have heat source and a confined area to keep that air warm.. so any other ways that you can dream up should work metal box, candles underneath.

Hey! I make lots of cakes from cake boxes and a few from scratch and I had that problem also, but I figured out that if you do not over beat your batter and put your cake in the oven and do not check on it for at least 30 to 35 minutes. That my cakes usually come out very fluffy and do not go flat.
