I have been subscribing to the Star e-paper for few months. They promise the e-paper will be available online at 5am, yet it has been numbers of time that it is not available. Today as I type this, the e-paper isn't available yet. Yesterday, it is not available until at least 8am I guess. Well, I don't mind if they cannot make it available on time as claimed once in a while, but it's just too often.

Besides that, I don't understand why they must include a clip in the e-browser, nothing useful but only slow down the download speed. Anyone having idea if this can be disable?

I agree the epaper having much problem. If you read last Sunday edition, you will be getting the first page shown is page 7. Few first pages missing.

Once in a while, you will also notice the images are not being shown, it's just empty.

I also noticed such problem, it can also be the e-browser problem. There is a poll about the e-browser recently, but sadly the choices on answer is so limited. Users are not allowed to vote anything bad about the e-browser.

How come when I try to access the Star online through the bluehyppo portal(cos I am a member) it says:

Half Yearly RM 100.00/182 days
Monthly RM 20.00/30 days
Yearly RM 180.00/365 days

So exactly how do you get the star online for free?

hi all...

e-star and thestar online are both similar but not the same.

in e-star, subscription is needed because e-star is exactly the same with the print edition of the star, just that u need to read them online. meaning to say, every page u see on the print edition (hard copy) of the star newspaper, will be the exact replica of what u see on e-star..that's why a subscription fee is required. it's like virtually browsing a website, giving the feeling of reading the newspaper, without dirtying your hands but you can flip thru page by page.

whereas thestar online does not require subscription, it's FREE.
hereby the contents vary because not everything u read on the star newspaper will be uploaded on the website.

in the news portal, there are three types:
i. shovelware
ii. moderate updating
iii. aggressive updating

of course there are no free lunches in this world, to get the exact content from a print media, u have to fork out a fee to enjoy what you're reading.
in shovelware, the online news portal updates exactly like how the print media would, without making any changes, like carbon copy. but this isn't exactly a good thing because writing for print media and writing for online news portal is two totally different thing. u can take breaks while reading actual newspaper but online, chances are you will just skip lengthy paragraphs (like what you're doing now) because ure gonna get bored.

moderate and aggressive updatings: like its namesake, u'll be seeing regular and frequent updates on the online newsportal with revelant and adequate changes from the hard copy. that's to suit the online readers' taste and preference. of course the latter overrides the former.

now, i think sum1 highlighted http://malaysiakini.com
well that too requires a subscription fee. if you don't u can still read others, but very "potong stim" because u'll miss out juicy news.

but then again, let's not forget the aforementioned news portal does not have a print edition. meaning to say, the credibility and accuracy should be doubted. in terms of black and white, you may argue the mentioned news portal fulfills that but let's not forget it is a website and changes can be made immediately without a trace. and that's not the same with print media whereby corrections can only be made the next day with apologies, let's say one chooses to bring up lawsuits, then the print media has to bear the brunt of the mistakes made. whereas the online gets away....

so back to back, i'd prefer a concrete news material with verifiable sources, trustworthy, credible and accurate. but then again, the choice is yours. im merely giving my "long-winded" 2 cents worth here. Smile

cheers.
