Car theft has always be the major concern of all car owner. Petaling Jaya was once being titled the "Car Theft Capital of the Country" due to the extremely high car lost reported. What is your best suggestions to stop such cases from rising.
Do you think installing anti-theft features alone is adequate?
Few LRT station carparks and major shopping mall carparks has the highest cases reported, what should the relevant management do?
BONUS QUESTION: Does the relevant authorities have done their part to curb this issue and what they ought to do?
Don't discuss any other topic in this section. ONLY discuss the question above.

What is your best suggestions to stop such cases from rising?
=============================================
I would suggest that a public awareness campaign be launched at all levels in general, and specifically in Petaling Jaya, to educate members of the public, among others:
• not to buy any suspicious used cars sold at low prices. This is because many vehicle thefts are due to the high demand for stolen vehicles both locally and in neighboring countries. Vehicle thefts could be cut effectively if there is no demand for such ill-gotten gains.
• be alert and take all necessary precautions to prevent vehicles from being stolen, knowing that car thefts also occur because of the opportunities created by car owners . If necessary, install vehicle security systems and auto anti-theft devices and ensure that when a vehicle is parked, it should be locked properly and valuables removed.
• be aware that the fight against vehicle thefts is not for the police to handle alone. It is a battle in which there must be sound collaboration between the police, the general public and the industry.
Discussions of this car theft issue in public forums such as this PJ Net, augurs well to the success of such a public awareness campaign.
Do you think installing anti-theft features alone is adequate?
==============================================
No. Installing anti-theft features alone may not be adequate.
No matter how good is your car security system, the bolder thieves may still force you into surrendering your vehicle. The syndicates may still tow your vehicle away in broad daylight without raising suspicion of passers-by. They can even export stolen vehicles easily to neighboring countries using legal means.
Apart from installing a reliable security system, it might be prudent for vehicle owners to change the ignition key, so that the same key to open the doors and boot, is not used as the ignition key. Nevertheless, some thieves do not even need any car key to start the car. They can easily connect the wires linked to the car ignition to get it started after disengaging the car alarm system.
Few LRT station car parks and major shopping mall car parks has the highest cases reported, what should the relevant management do?
=========================================
The management of the LRT station car parks and major shopping mall car parks, which has the highest cases of car thefts reported, should enhance security in such crime-prone areas by installing security systems such as access control, close-circuit television (CCTV), automatic car park gates, automatic car park barriers etc. Such security systems are known to be useful in crime prevention and investigation. CCTVs, for instance, could help the police monitor the movement of criminals which could be used in investigations.
Also, with assistance and support from all the parties involved in the fight against vehicle thefts, they may consider implementation of an effective vehicle identification system to enhance security within their car parks. Each time a vehicle passes through access control at the car park entrance, they could capture and record its registration plate and physical shape. At the car park exit, they could check whether the information observed at the car park exit matches the data recorded at the car park entrance. In the event of a mismatch due to change of registration plate by a car thief, automatic car park barrier shall remain closed and the system shall generate an appropriate alarm message to indicate that action is needed by car park attendants.
In short, car park operators and car park attendants shall make it more difficult for the criminals to remove any stolen cars from the car parks.
Does the relevant authorities have done their part to curb this issue and what they ought to do?
============================================
The relevant authorities may have done their part to curb this issue. However, while their much-desired effort is appreciated, nothing shall be proud of as there is always room for improvement and the fight against such a social menace requires consistent and continuous effort and full cooperation from everyone of us.
What should they do? There is always room for improvement for the relevant authorities.
The police, for instance, may work closer with their counterparts in neighboring countries to trace and smash syndicates which may have large networking connections everywhere by insulating every level of their operations conducted by suppliers, middlemen, buyers and exporters, who have never met each other.
Car manufacturers shall install reliable anti-theft device as a standard feature in all the vehicles produced – for instance, a system that comes with an alarm, immobilizer, tracking system and recovery services, which could protect vehicle owners from theft due to hot-wiring, tow away, robbery and hijack. By embedding vehicle immobilizer such as placing a tiny RFID integrated circuit within a vehicle's key, they might curb car theft effectively.
Forwarding companies at the seaports may make it a must to state the actual contents of the containers. This could then help the authorities concerned track vehicles that have been loaded into containers to be shipped out of the country.
Customs officers shall install state-of-the-art scanning device at the customs checkpoint and inspect every container shipped out from the country. Police may conduct port inspections to see what is inside the containers, if they suspect stolen cars are being sent overseas.
Rakan COP (Community-Oriented Policing) programme could be enhanced as it has been effective in reducing the crime rate. Criminals may be more fearful as they know that although physically the police are not there, the eyes and ears of the police, namely the public, are there.
In short, there must be a holistic approach, initiated by the relevant authorities or any party concerned, with full cooperation from the general public to address the issue. The Government could even set up a National Council on Prevention of Vehicle Thefts to address the issue at the local, national and international levels, and to streamline all the efforts taken towards this end.
Until last Wednesday, 1am in the morning, I thought I knew just about everything about car theft prevention. I had an anti-scan remote alarm, with optional anti-carjacking feature by Viper, extra shock sensors, a headlock and... yes the club. These are not state of the art equipment, but they do deter some punk from taking my car for a joyride. Anyway, back to the story, and cut to the chase...hmm...no pun intended there... my car was stolen so boldly, right from my driveway. So that was that. I was in shock for a moment, and then I realized I was too careless, and naive. The simple device called the club could've deterred the thief, but I didn't put it on... coz it's sitting in my driveway, and it's a relatively safe neighborhood. Somehow, the thief managed to defeat the alarm/headlock without me ever knowing until I was rudely awakened by the engine noise and screeching tires. ..So...lessons to be learned...and things to bear in mind...
1) Your car is never safe...even if it's sitting at home, or under a light...locks it up with whatever you have.
2) If you have a flashy car...ie...custom wheels, spoiler, bra, ground effect, do keep a low profile around the neighborhood where you park...ie...don't blast your radio.
3) Be sure to keep all official documents with you...ie Insurance card, registration card, and everything with your name/address with you...when you take your car in for service. (I have a feeling that someone, where I had my radio system installed, pulled an inside job on me.)
4) Don't leave personal belongings in the car to minimize lost/ if you must leave it...put it out of sight! But things in trunk before you park to prevent nosy on-lookers from "checking out" what you have.
5) Avoid parking at areas where major highways are easily accessible. I swear that by the time cops came to my house, my car is in another state already.
6) Be prepared that even if you spend thousands of dollars in protecting your vehicle...if a pro wants your car...they'll tow it with a flat-bed if they have to. For all the Lexus, Mercedes, and BMW owners out there... Beware! Contracts from other countries are flooding in for these cars.
7) Due to a recent trend call car-jacking, plan your route before hand, avoid high risk/crime areas, drive with windows up and doors locked. If you ever feel threatened...run a light if you have to...explain to the cop later...and I’m sure they'll understand...I hope. You don't have to be a victim if you don't give them the opportunity.
Do keep all receipts and serial numbers of parts and accessories relating to you car. They may come in handy for insurance purposes.
9) Insurance is an ugly business...but it does make the situation less bloody. hmm...what's that cliché...better safe than sorry.
10) Get real...this world is not a safe place anymore. Prepare yourself.
ps...with a new industry in combating auto theft and related crimes, do check out the satellite retrieval systems.

Hello Admin.
I wanted to post this in CAR THEFT message, but it said I had no authority.
Maybe you can post it for me, it is important to prevent car theft.
Kind regards, Dr. John M. Vos.
=========================================
Losing your car to theft is always your own fault.
People all want to drive good-looking shiny new cars.
Just look around and notice how many car from the same brand and same color drive around in your area.
To prevent your car from being stolen buy a can of paint: Red, White or Purple.
Make you own MARK on the roof of your car, so it can be seen from every window and even from the police helicopter.
You can make a Chinese mark, a cross, a question mark, whatever, just so it's unique.
Why do you care about the looks of your car as long as it isn't being stolen.
To you your car itself is more valuable than the way your car looks.
No car thief will drive of with a car that is marked that way.
I am doing this already for 20 years and never had anymore stolen from it than the hoop caps.
When you set an example, many more people may see it as a smart idea and copy it.
Less car theft will be the result, only the ones that are not marked will fall prey to thieves.
Years ago I told my garage that I wanted a station wagon occasion. He called me a few days later and said he had one, but the color was a bit funny: ORANGE. I jumped right at it for no thief will ever steal an orange car, it's to obvious, right.
That gave me the idea to mark my car from then on, and so should anyone who wants to protect his property.
I am certain it will help many people, except the ones that prefer not to damage their car. From the 16th till the 24th of February I stay in the PJ Hilton Hotel and will be able to collect my reward there.
Thank you kindly, Dr. John M. Vos.

I lost my car in SS2 before, near the police station some more. A nissan. Never recovered. They say no matter what lock you put, if they are determined to steal it they will steal it. Even if it means towing your car away.
I believe prevention and common sense is the best. These are my tips.
1. Learn to identify high risk areas. Never park in dark or isolated alleys or a dark basement. The presence of people make car thieves nervous. Park as close as possible to populated walkways like mamak stall, or where you notice there is a CCTV.
2. Hide away from sight any things that LOOK valuable in your car. Don't give them a reason to break in.
3. Get a good additional lock. While locks will not stop a determined thief, it will cost them valuable time.
4. Steering locks are popular and also quite useless. You can saw through the soft metal of a steering wheel in seconds to remove the lock. The best one for me is a clutch or brake lock because the metal of the brake pedal is very tough to saw through.
5. Park at a guarded lot. At least you might get witnesses to the crime. Paying RM4 is much cheaper than the expenses you incur after losing your car.
6. Avoid using car jockeys. There's always a chance someone might duplicate your keys.
If you act smart, the chances of your car being stolen can be reduced by 70% without spending a single cent on anti theft devices etc.
put as many types of alarm/locks/immobiliser as you can afford... the more devices, the more the thief is discouraged from stealing your car and choose another car
alarm system - have all possible sensors like shock sensors and tilt sensors and movement sensors, a loud siren, immobiliser, etc...some cars come with built in immobiliser, like vios and myvi...not enuf because thief comes with own set of stuff, unplugs yours and plugs his in and drives off...GPRS tracking, electronic chip access (i know of a case with this technology, even with key in ignition, if chip is with driver and driver is thrown out of car, the car will be immobilised a few seconds later because signal from chip not detected at close range), whetever you can afford...but this all may not be enuf because thief my try first before discovering difficulty, thus already damaging your car.
do not forget to install a lock for the bonnet (some prefer not to just in case battery dies and cannot open bonnet) and also a back up battery just in case they unplug the car's battery.
so, use both steering lock and pedal lock, handbrake lock. pedal lock is most discouraging because thief has to bend over down and expose his back when try to remove it.
you can also try a disabling switch which cuts of power to ECU or fuel pump or starter. hidden switch.
have as many as possible, and a thief will not want to steal your car unless really really worth stealing like a merc or beemer or lexus, etc...in which they might be willing to kill for...
don't forget rim lock nuts to protect your rims...the more sets the better too...
With electronics and GPS becomming so much cheaper, why doesn't government include a simple tracking GPS in the cost of registration. Would save them heaps in time and court costs of police investigating ( or not ) all the thefts
