QiGong is not so much for self defence or martial applications as it is for good health and longevity. I think you got it confused with NeiGung. QiGong works on the accumulation and circulation of chi in the body to bestow good health. NeiGung works on the body structure & rooting(it was said that GrandMaster Yip Man, Bruce Lee's teacher, could stand on 1 foot with a rope tied to it while 4-5 pl pulled on the rope and he could not be moved) and uses the accumulated chi for FaLi(explosive strength) or FaJing or what is known as Ging Lik in WingChun. These concepts of FaLi, FaJing and Ging Lik is different from sheer brute strength or force. This is what is meant by 'Internal Power'. As a person ages his physical strength deteriorates. He becomes weaker. So if you learn a 'hard' martial art you know you will become less and less effective with time. In the Internal arts, although your physical strength becomes weaker with aging, your internal strength (ging lik)as well as things like 'sensitivity' improves with time. In Karate & TaeKwonDo they practise hardening of the bodies weapons like feet and hands for breaking planks and bricks. The insensitivity to pain allows for prodigious feats of breaking. In the Internal arts this sort of practice is frowned upon as the emphasis is on developing 'sensitivity' which is why you have exercises like 'tui shou'(push hands) in TaiChi and 'chi sau'(sticky hands) in WingChun. All these are exercises to develop sensitivity. In TaiChi this is known as TingJing(listening to the Jing/ging) ie the ability to detect the incoming ging lik from your opponent.
It was said of Mas Oyama,(the founder of Kyokushinkai Karate-you can see the Korean movie, "Fighter in the Wind" which is based on his life) that towards the end of his life, would scream in pain if anyone even lightly touched his hands which had been seriously damaged through a lifetime of 'hardening' exercises. At his peak, Oyama who had the nickname 'God Hand', could break almost anything with his hand including live bull's horns.

Learn QiGong for good health and NeiGung for internal power in martial aplications.

In life, sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.

Very Happy

first of all my question why you want to learn self defence ? to show off or for your health or to really self defence ?

to me i will learn tai chi for health...even you have taekwando or karate black belt also no use when ppl comes with a gun or knives..

tell you a story, my friend, a black belt in taekwando (represent Malaysia in major tournament) and also in the midst of learning muay thai. he was robbed by 2 ppl with knives. with his standard, he can easily defeat those robber, but he was thinking of his gf which was with him thus he gave in and handed what ever he has to the robber.

so u want to learn to fight off crime or to show off ??

Is this the Qigong you want to learn?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nu99GRUUN6Y

This video clip features Dr. Eisenberg (MD from Harvard medical school) and Bill Moyers from the documentary, 'In search of Chi'

Try and get hold of Dr Eisenberg's book, 'Encounters with Chi', an excellent read!
