Yes, they're everywhere and they give you the wonderful story of the Garra rufa (Fish from Turkey). But are you getting what they say you are? I'll leave you to decide.
This is my first post on your forum and I was directed here from another Blog site in regards to the topic at hand - Garra rufa obscura and fish spas.
This fish has been a passion of mine for almost 3 years now and that was WAY before this fish spa business took it's hold in Malaysia. Truth be told, I have travelled the world on a quest to learn more about this fish. I have been to Turkey in the Kangal region to look at this fish first hand, I have been to Japan to see "Fish Spas". I have been to Germany and Czech to meet breeders of this fish.
The Garra rufa fish "Therapy" is nothing new. It has been in around for years, but only in the last 2years did it hit Singapore and then Malaysia. It first showed up at Qian Hu fish farm in Singapore. Now, for your information Qian Hu is the only public listed (On the stock exchange leh!) Importer and Exporter of tropical fish in Singapore, so read this as they are LOADED ($$$$$$$$). They imported these little Skin-healing fish from Germany just to test the market. The idea caught on in Singapore and then other people caught on to the idea.
At Aquarama (This is one of the biggest Ornamental fish trade shows) last year we started to see Chinese companies coming and advertising their "products" which they called "Dr Fish", Chin Chin (Kiss Kiss in Chinese), and some even had the audacity to call Garra rufa) there. Companies from Chengdu and Hainan China were trying to sell off Nile Tilapia (Orechromis niloticus) as "Dr Fish". They had "Packages" and "Turn Key" solutions to present to their "clients". Many of their "Clients" ended up being un-suspecting Malaysians looking for a quick buck.
OK, what am I getting at? The long of the short is that the REAL Garra rufa are protected in their native habitat of Turkey, Syria and Iran, they are not available in large quantities and the most important factor is that they are BL*ODY D*MN EXPENSIVE. The initial capital outlay to having the REAL deal is gastronomical! These fish could be imported from specialist breeders in Germany and Czech Republic for approx US$9ea! Now imagine a fish spa with 10 000pc of these fish and what that would cost?. Get the picture?
On the other hand, the Chin Chin fish (Oreochromis niloticus) is one of the most prolific of Tilapia species. Infact this fish used to be packed 50pc for RM1 as feeder fish during the height of the LuoHan (Flowerhorn) craze couple of years back. These fish can get up to a foot (30cm, 12 inches... now u gals should know how long that is. Smutty pun intended) in less than a year! Imagine one of these things taking a chunk out of you! But hey they are CHEAP as CHIPS!! Easy for any Tom, Dick and Harry (In Malaysian terms, Ah Keong, Ahmad and Muthu) to start business.
I do have some commercial interest in this fish, as in the last year, we have been doing a lot of R&D into the breeding of this miracle fish. We have recently succeeded and we are now marketing this fish locally in Malaysia, albiet slowly as we cannot supply enough even for export. I would say that currently we are the cheapest source of the REAL Garra rufa in the world and we have had export interest from Korea, Japan, USA and even as far as Istanbul, Turkey (they don't have the fish in Istanbul and it is illegal for them to catch wild fish in Kangal which is 400km away, so they want to import the fish and start a Tourist spa in Istanbul). That said, the price is still no where as cheap as the tilapia commonly used in Malaysia for fish spas to be mushrooming up left right and center!
For those nice guys and gals who would like to have a taste of what the sensation of the REAL Garra rufa, you can get your hands wet at: Slippery Little Suckers - www.slipperylittlesuckers.com.my for FREE!!!
Dip your hand into our tank of 500+ Garra rufa and see if you like the sensation.
My only request is that the next time you step into one of these fish spas, take a good look at the fish. If it isn't the REAL Garra rufa I suggest you give that business a miss. (Or if you are brave enough, lead them to my article.)
Cheerios... and have fun. U only live once.
